Focusing on your clients is your number one priority, but the components of running a small business are important to help your business grow. Business development helps you grow and develop your practice. Attorney At Work suggests that there are a few common business development mistakes that lawyers make, and we’ve given you a few tips on how to do better.
- Positioning
Lawyers often promote themselves too broadly, instead of having a more narrow focus. When you try to base your practice around too many different types of problems or issues, you aren’t seen as an “expert” in any certain area. If you focus on specializing in more specific areas, the areas that you know best, your potential clients will see you as an expert in your field.
- Planning
Big goals are important, but it’s just as important to plan all the smaller steps you need to take in order to reach that goal. Many lawyers set their annual goals (annual revenue, referrals, business growth, just to name a few), but few go further to create an action plan. Big goals can often be broken down into a few main ideas, and those main ideas should have actionable, measurable, attainable steps for the entire year.
- Consistency
It is easy to jump into business development at the beginning or the year, or reassess when you hit a slow patch. Lawyers have many good, implemented ideas, but it is important to continue to implement successful initiatives, and reassess your business development and growth often. Continue to check-in on all of the ideas you’ve put in action. What is working well? Keep it up. Spend more time and resources on it. What doesn’t seem to be working? Change it up or use the time and resources from that project on something that is working or something new.
