According to Eric Farber in his article for AttorneyAtWork.com, assistants, paralegals, receptionist, and legal researchers in a law firm can often feel like they are replaceable compared to attorneys at a firm with a traditional law firm hierarchy. This can lead to a larger turnover rate if employees feel undervalued.
Here is one of the ways to make your law firm support staff feel more valued:
- Professional Development.
Provide opportunities for professional development and training for your support staff. Invest in your support staff by finding opportunities for them to grow their knowledge. Investing in your staff shows them that you value them as employees and that they aren’t easily replaceable.
Your staff can participate in online webinars or training classes to grow their knowledge on a specific area. Some possible classes your support staff could take might be on law research, customer service, or how to be better at time management. These are just some of the examples but it’s also a great idea to ask your staff what they want to improve on and if there’s a part of their job they want to be better at or something they are interested in learning. Teaming up with each employee to see how they want to grow is a way to connect with them. Working with your employees and knowing their professional goals is another example of showing them you value them.
