During 2020 many industries took hits to employment. As many industries are in the process of recovery, the legal profession has an interesting anomaly. Data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a simultaneous increase in employment and unemployment in the legal workforce for February 2021. Another interesting part of the study showed that these numbers are not the same for men and women in the legal profession.
These numbers going hand in hand would indicate growth in legal hiring and job-hunting. The increase in hiring and hunting could result from so many returning to traditional school and getting vaccinated. Perhaps with returning to traditional school and more firms returning to office life as normal, the unemployment numbers will begin to drop.
The report would also indicate that women are unemployed in more significant numbers than their male counterparts, 4% for women in February and only 2.4% for men. The employment for both genders rose in equal measure in February.
Bloomberg Law analyzed this data, and we encourage you to read all the details in the article.
