Public Justice Helps Make Remington Rifle Defect Documents Public
According to Public Justice, they represented plaintiff Richard Barber in his efforts to make the court documents public in the personal injury case, Aleksich v. Remington, which involved the defective trigger mechanism of Remington’s Model 700 rifle.
The court file was sealed when the case settled in 1995. Barber wanted the records to be unsealed so the public would have access to the documents. The documents includ important concerns about the rifle’s trigger mechanism, including evidence that the rifle could discharge without the trigger being pulled and that Remington had known about the defects for decades.
In September 2012, a Montana federal court ruled that the case file should be unsealed, with the exception of information about the settlement amount. Public Justice staff attorneys Amy Radon and Leslie Bailey served as lead counsel, alongside co-counsel Bill Rossbach and Richard Ramler.
Public Justice continued its work to increase public awareness by working with the class counsel in Pollard v. Remington and rifle expert Richard Barber, to collect and organize important documents related to the Remington trigger defect, making information about the rifle's history, consumer complaints, and safety concerns more accessible.
