Dewayne Johnson, the former school grounds keeper who said that Monsanto’s Roundup caused his deadly cancer, was awarded $289 million by jurors earlier this month.
There have been 4,000 other cases filed around the country by people who have been diagnosed with cancer that they believe was caused by Monsanto’s weed killer. Johnson’s case was the first of its kind to reach trial.
Monsanto still withholds that their product is completely safe and does not cause cancer. They argue that Johnson’s cancer was most likely either caused by a similar product he used, Ranger Pro, or his cancer was slow developing and started before he even began working with the products as the school groundskeeper.
According to Yahoo! Finance, Johnson and his lawyer believe the success of his case will give other people who believe the weed killer caused their cancer the opportunity to get justice.
