Two cities that are important to those of us at Advocate Capital (i.e. Cleveland, OH and Nashville, TN) are featured in a recent interview in The Tennessean. Dr. Steven Nissen, chairman of the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, recently spoke at the “Focus on the HeArt” symposium at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville.
Dr. Nissen played a key role in the FDA’s withdrawal of Vioxx from the market due to safety concerns, and he has recently posed questions regarding the safety of the diabetes drug, Avandia.
The Tennessean posted an interview with Dr. Nissen in which he delves into the issues surrounding the FDA approval process and how dangerous drugs can get to market. Moreover, once they’re on the market, it is notoriously difficult to have them taken off the market.
It is good to see an independent-minded physician willing to take on big pharma.
