On October 31, a complaint was filed in federal court against Ben & Jerry’s parent company, Unilever for falsely advertising that the milk and cream used in their ice creams comes from “happy cows,” according to CBS News.
Ben & Jerry’s has a “Caring Dairy” program where dairy farmers who meet certain requirements annually are compensated for their sustainable efforts.
The lawsuit alleges that only a small portion of the milk and cream used in Ben & Jerry’s products comes from “Caring Dairy” program participating farms while the rest of the milk and cream used is from mass-production farms.
CBS News stated that the lawsuit claims that the company is able to charge a premium price for their product because of their claims that the ice cream comes from “happy cows.”
According to CBS News, a Ben & Jerry’s spokesman said they do not comment on pending law suits.
