As many businesses make their way back to their offices that were closed during the coronavirus shutdown, building owners should take caution. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the closure of buildings they lease due to Legionella bacteria found in the water systems.
It is believed the bacteria likely grew because of the prolonged pandemic shutdown. Plumbing in buildings that have been closed could be the perfect breeding ground for Legionella. Outbreaks are often associated with large water systems, like those found in hospitals, hotels, and office buildings. According to the CDC, the most likely sources of infection include cooling towers, decorative fountains, and showers.
Legionella can cause severe pneumonia in those affected. It is worth noting that Legionella is treatable with antibiotics, unlike the flu or the coronavirus. Adults that are current or former smokers, over the age of 50, and have a weakened immune system are all at a higher risk for getting sick.
