Running your law firm, trying cases, meeting prospective clients, and networking with other attorneys can make it challenging to prioritize every aspect of your professional life when all of your tasks feel pressing. According to Attorneyatwork.com’s article by Jamie Spannhake, here are a few steps you can use to help you prioritize your tasks.
Breathe and Make a list.
You’ll first want to take a deep breath to calm yourself down. This deep breath will help you destress and not be overwhelmed.
Then you will want to make a list of tasks you need to accomplish and the deadline. You can type out your to-do list or write it down on a legal pad. After you have written out your to-do list, organize the items by priority.
You can take another sheet of paper and write your items on a new list by priority.
Delegate Your List.
Review the items on your to-do list and consider what you can delegate. Try delegating tasks to your law firm employees before putting the items off another week.
Consider tasks that your team will excel in that you can pass on to them. Consider having your assistant follow up on emails about future meetings, phone calls, or networking opportunities by giving your assistant access to your email calendar. Ask an associate attorney to take on meeting new clients if your schedule is overbooked.
Delegating to your team shows that you trust them and have confidence in their ability. Delegating also helps you from taking on too many tasks.
