Implementing new technology at your law firm is exciting, whether it's a new computer, new phone, or new software for case management, trial preparation, accounting, client intake, or financing; however, new technology tools can also be challenging and overwhelming for your team, depending on how you introduce it.
It is crucial to the success of the new technology that you prepare for the challenges you may face before you begin implementation. Here are a few ways you can ensure that your team adjusts well to new technology:
- When choosing a new technology vendor, ask about their onboarding process and whether they offer ongoing training, should you need it. You will want to choose a company that will help your team fully understand how the program works and solve any issues you may have down the road.
- Make sure you have at least one or two team members who fully understand how the new tool works, so that when you introduce it to the rest of your team, they will have colleagues to turn to who can help them learn or reach out to the right person who will know how to answer their question.
- Create a detailed plan for introducing the new technology at your firm, including a timeline. You will want to consider who will be using it, whether it is a totally new program or replacing existing technology at your firm, and whether any existing information needs to be saved or transferred to the new tool. You will also want to consider how it will affect your clients and whether you need to send them any communication about it.
- Set up time with the team members who will be affected to explain the new technology, why you are implementing it, how it will affect their day-to-day work, and how to use it. You may need to schedule more than one training session, depending on how your team is feeling. Check in with them to ensure they feel comfortable throughout the transition.
It is important to prepare your team for any technology changes. When a law firm is growing, change is welcome and inevitable. Still, it can be difficult, so support your team through the transition and give ample opportunity to address any concerns or questions they may have.
